Travel tips

Passport & Visa

Cambodia Visa Policy (2026)

Cambodia offers visa exemption for several ASEAN countries. Citizens of Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, and the Philippines can stay up to 30 days visa-free, while Thailand, Brunei, and Myanmar are granted up to 14 days.

Travelers not eligible for visa exemption can apply for an e-Visa (USD 36, single entry, 30 days) via https://www.evisa.gov.kh/ or obtain a visa on arrival at major entry points.

As visa policies may change, travelers are advised to check with official sources before departure.

Currency

The official currency of Cambodia is the Riel (KHR), but the US Dollar (USD) is widely used and commonly accepted nationwide. Prices are often quoted in USD, while Riel is mainly used for small change.

ATMs are available in major cities such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Most dispense USD, but withdrawal fees may apply. International cards are not accepted at all ATMs, so it’s recommended to carry some cash.

Exchange rate (approx.):
1 USD ≈ 4,000 KHR
1 EUR ≈ 4,300–4,500 KHR

Weather

Weather in Cambodia

Cambodia has a tropical climate with two main seasons: dry and rainy.

The dry season (October to April) is generally hot and sunny, making it the most comfortable time to visit.

The hot season (March to June) can be very warm, while the rainy season (July to September) brings frequent but usually short showers, with higher humidity.

Vaccinations & Medicines

Cambodia has lifted all COVID-19 entry requirements; no testing or vaccination proof is required for travelers.

It is recommended to consult your doctor or a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure for health advice and necessary vaccinations. Commonly recommended vaccines include Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A & B, and others depending on your travel plans.

Travelers should also carry basic medicines such as pain relievers, allergy medication, and treatments for common digestive issues. Malaria prevention may be advised for certain rural areas.

Phone & Internet Service

To call Cambodia from abroad, dial +855 followed by the city code (without “0”) and the phone number.

Local SIM cards are easy to purchase upon arrival if your phone is unlocked. Popular providers like Smart and Cellcard offer good coverage and reliable 4G internet.

Free Wi-Fi is widely available in most hotels, restaurants, and cafés.

Flights & Airports

Cambodia is served by three main international airports: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. These airports connect the country with major destinations across Asia and beyond.

Phnom Penh International Airport is the main gateway to the capital, handling most international and domestic flights.

Siem Reap is now served by the new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI), which replaced the old airport and offers improved facilities and more international connections, especially for visitors to Angkor Wat.

Sihanoukville International Airport serves the coastal region, with an increasing number of regional flights supporting tourism and business travel.

Security

Cambodia is generally a safe and politically stable destination for travelers.

However, petty crime such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and minor scams can occur, particularly in busy areas of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Travelers are advised to stay alert and keep valuables secure.

When joining tours or outdoor activities, it is recommended to use reputable operators and guides.

Road safety can be inconsistent, so caution is advised, especially at night. For boat travel, choose reliable services and follow weather advisories in coastal areas.

Language

The official language of Cambodia is Khmer, which is spoken nationwide.

English is widely used, especially in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants, and is the main foreign language today.

French is still spoken by some older generations, but is much less common.

Time difference

Cambodia follows Indochina Time (ICT), which is UTC+7.

It is typically 6–7 hours ahead of London, depending on daylight saving time in the UK.

Electricity

Cambodia uses plug types A, C, and G. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz.

Power supply is generally stable in major cities and hotels. However, occasional outages may still occur, especially in rural areas. Most hotels are equipped with backup generators to ensure continuous electricity.

On-site traffic

Domestic flights connect major cities such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville.

Trains operate between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, with stops in Kampot and Takeo, offering a scenic but slower travel option.

Buses and coaches are widely available and connect most major cities, though travel times may vary.

Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are common and affordable for short distances; always agree on the price in advance and wear a helmet when applicable.

Car and bicycle rentals are also available. For self-driving, an appropriate driving license is required.
